Let's pretend we are at a party together along with about a hundred other people.
Dipping your second strawberry into its creamy rich stream, you are standing next to the chocolate fountain looking around at all the gorgeous lights and decorations strategically and creatively placed around the party venue.
Out of the corner of your right eye, you spot me. I am walking up to you. You have never seen me before. I have on a red flowing dress with a bright turquoise chunky necklace and turquoise pumps.
To your surprise, I stop right in front of you. I extend my right hand out to shake yours, look into your eyes and say, "You know what? I saw you from across the room and you look like an egotistical and selfish kind of person."
What do you think you would say back to me? Would you tell me to fuck off? Would you, for a moment, feel like an egotistical and selfish person and start to second guess yourself?
For me, I have let other people's opinions influence me and dictate what I thought about myself. And I wanted it to stop. So the purpose of illustrating this fake scenario was a way to set up the topic for today....
What is your IDENTITY placed in?
Who do YOU believe you are despite what people say or think about you?
First, let's read the definition of IDENTITY: the characteristics determining who or what a person or thing is.
Now, with that in mind, fill in the blank with a list of things you would say are characteristics of your IDENTITY...
I AM ________________________________________________________________.
What did you write?
Did you start off by saying what you did for a living? Did you say that you are a mother of four or a Grandpa of ten grandkids? Did you say you are a funny or creative person? Whatever your answer what I am wanting to challenge you to do is to ask yourself WHY these things are important to you and what if they were no longer so.
For instance, what if you lost your job? Would you feel different if you showed up to a dinner party and met a bunch of strangers for the first time? Would you feel confident being an unemployed person with no title anymore or is your identity and worth rooted in something more solid and consistent than that?
For me, knowing identity truths about myself that come from GOD helps me. When I meditate on the WORD and remind myself of who I am in His eyes it helps renew, reshape, refresh, reform and redeem who I am. When I place mt identity and worth in JUST what GOD says about me, I am more able to do the things I was created to do. AND I MEAN, living the MOST HIGHEST CALL and PURPOSE for my life.
FOR MANY many, maaaannnnny, MANY YEARS, I could not get traction in my life. I was tossed to and fro dependent upon outside circumstances or what people thought or by my feelings. TODAY, when I lean on what GOD SAYS about me, it changes my life and no matter what ANYONE says and no matter what happens in this ever changing world, nobody can take away who I REALLY am...
This is "Who God Says I AM"...
Who am I that the highest King would welcome me. I was lost but He brought me in. Oh His love for me Oh His love for me. Who the Son sets free, Oh is free indeed. I’m a child of God Yes I am. Free at last. He has ransomed me. His grace runs deep. While I was a slave to sin Jesus died for me. Yes He died for me,
Who the Son sets free Oh is free indeed. I’m a child of God Yes I am. In my Father’s house There’s a place for me. I’m a child of God Yes I am. I am chosen Not forsaken. I am who You say I am. You are for me Not against me. I am who You say I am
